Description

Rifle in an Oak tree near Rochester, WA. Placed there allegedly about 1858 as a symbol of friendship between the Chehalis Indians and the white settlers. When the Indians of Western Washington rose in the late 1850's, the Chehalis did not participate. The tree was forgotten and about 1906 a Railroad survey crew came upon it, but older settlers did recall its meaning, so photos were taken and printed at the time. John E. Vosper 1887-1971 was part of the crew. Copy of Jim Vosper originals. Have negative.
