The Mellen Street Bridge span over the Chehalis River was known as "Hangman's Bridge" for many years, because the body of a union agitator once dangled from its upper braces. The victim, Wesley Everest, was lynched amidst mob fury that followed the shooting deaths of four Veterans at the conclusion of an Armistice Day Parade in 1919. The Mellen Street Bridge has since been rebuilt but the old nickname still clings.
