P9558Description
Color snapshot showing the blue camas flower which the Chehalis Indians used for food. To cook: dig a pit and make a fire for 1/2 a day. Heat large rocks, then remove all wood, leaving only coals and hot rocks, quickly lay a bed of sword fern and put down a sack full of camas roots. Cover with ferns then put all the earth back on top. Leave for 2 days. When you open the pit, the camas is ready to peel and eat. It tastes like a date. Do not pick the white camas, it is poison. Taken in 1970.Collection
