Photo of the Chehalis River Bridge at Galvin, WA. Photo depicts the building of the 2nd suspension bridge across the Chehalis River near Galvin. During its construction, traffic to and from Lincoln Creek was ferried across the river at a point about 1 mile upstream from the bridge site. Since most of the traffic during this period was of the horse drawn variety, there were restrictions on how fast a horse could travel over the bridge. An overhead sign posted at each end of the bridge warned of a $5.00 fine for anyone driving faster than a walk across it. The purpose of the slower speed was to reduce the rhythm and vibration caused by galloping horses. The faster the gait would cause the steel struts to clank by striking each other resulting in possible damage. The suspension bridge has now been replaced with a permanent concrete structure.
