1st School in Eastern Lewis County 1896 in Vance, later called Randle. Photo shows building with several people. ID: Maude & Roy Chilcoat, Joe Chillcoat seated at left, Claude the on steps, Maude held by her mother, Lona by her mother's side, Roy in foreground. Seated are Jake Siler and Harry Owens. Standing are Jim and Jasper Baugh, brothers of Alice Chilcoat. At right is a cedar tree where Joe Chilcoat posted his homestead notice in 1885. Window in side of cabin is the Vance Post Office. This was the birthplace of the first white boy and girl born east of Mossyrock, WA. The teacher was Clifford Orr. Heat was a mud and brick fireplace, seats were split cedar boards and slab cedar desks.Teacher's desk was a large coffee box turned on its side. 1st 10 students were Ernest & Lona Chilcoat, Berdie, Dora and Dixie Stevens, Henry and Maude Moores, John Peters, Charles Randle and Mary Dolton. Lessons were hand printed on heavy paper about 36" square. 10 or 15 of these pages were held together in a 2 stick squeeze that was tied at each end and had a hole in the center to enable it to be placed on a tall pointed rod that had its base split 3 ways like a misic stand. Report cards were also hand printed on ruled paper. The school later establlished as Dist.#101 and had a term of 57 days or about 3 months. The building was replaced by a building on an acre of land donated by the Chilcoats. This school was established as the Randle School. Three more were built, one destroyed by fire. Have negative.
