P4669Description
Funeral cortege of lodge men in Centralia. Taken on the 100 block of South Tower Ave., looking north. The Lodge officers have breast-bands and members vest. The taller building at the center right is Butterworth's Undertaking Parlor. In the rear are one or two horse drawn vehicles but no hearse (the city didnt have one in 1890). Who's funeral is not known. The two story building at right is Clanrick Crosby's store. He came in 1873 and the store was one of only 3 buildings in the vacinity of Tower Ave. and Main St. Just across the street on the left was Isaac Wingard's store, the first post office in town and the Wingard Hotel. The third buildling was the Pioneer Hotel, built by Joseph Young. It was larger than Wingard's because the latter hotel consisted mostly of an attic for sleepers. Looking down the east side of Tower Ave., all of the buildings are frame structures. In a series of fires from about 1895 to past 1900, a good part of the stores burned, blazes also going down West Main St. Sidewalks are planks and the street is dirt. There were no street lights but there are several crossarm poles, possibly for telegraph purposes. The photographer was T.R. Williams, the earliest and only one in Centralia at this time. The first White building at center right has a staircase going along its side to the second floor. Williams had his studio there, where he took photos of scores of settlers and there is his sign on the front of the building, 1889.Collection
