Betty Cramer Frayn of Pe Ell, WA. Northern Pacific Railroad Telegraph Operator inside the station at Chehalis, WA. Depot. L to R: Engineer Slim Moore, Conductor (in white)____?, Fireman____?, sitting on Ms. Fryan's lap holding chrochet thread. circa 1950. They were waiting for a south bound heavy freight train to arrive. The steam engine hooked on the train behind the caboose, usually, although sometimes as the "lead engine" and with it's extra power, helped the freight train up the hill to Napavine, where they "cut-off". 1950-51 saw the last of the nostalgic steam engine and the newer diesels replaced them, having more horse-power and more efficient. The steam engine always had an engineer, fireman and conductor.Lexicon
