Castle Rock, WA. This 1907 view of Castle Rock shows lower Front Street and Shintaffer. The bridge is the first one over the Cowlitz River.
The following is taped to the back of the picture.
"This large picture shows old Front Street to north of Castle Rock. I think it is Shintaffer to the left. It went clear to the Cowlitz River with the old Robbins Mill by the riverside. They were English. Crystal bought a small oak drop leaf table from Mrs. Robbins, which she dearly loved. There is a painted commode, made at the mill of fir, with carved pulls from them.
Our Aunt Lillie Derrick lived on Shintaffer very near the river. Later the dike was built.
Over near the bridge was the Peabody Mill, deserted by the time I was young, where we used to play around the cat walks and boilers (how dangerous).
The high bridge did not last long and they had to go back to the ferry started by our grandfather, H. H. Powelson (who lived by the river close to the second bridge in a house he had built in 1892). Written by James mother.
