Description

Battle of U.S.S. Constitution and H.M.S. Guerriere - This picture recaptures the famous sea battle between the USS Constitution and England's HMS Guerriere during the war of 1812. The frigate, Guerrier, pride of the British Navy, was totally demolished and was sunk at sea after the Constitution's Captain Isaac Hull removed all the British seamen and their belongings. Although the enormous strength of the British Navy made the loss of a single frigate militarily insignificant, the boost to American morale was tremendous. And as the Constitution went on to win a series of naval battles against the British, the prestige of the American Navy grew in the eyes of the entire world. Later affectionately known as "Old Ironsides" because of her ability to withstand the enemies cannonballs, the USS Constitution became the foundation of the United States Navy. Painting is by an unknown artist. Color Print
