The original suspension bridge was constructed in 1928 by Thomas J. Kelly, the Milwaukee Timber Company and Government Agencies. It may have been rebuilt by the C.C.C.'s before a cable came loose August 25, 1934. John Kelly was hurled into the Cowlitz River and drowned. Pat Kelly fell onto the rocks and broke both ankles. Francis "Red" Callahan grabbed a cable and made it safely back to land.
