Employer RecommendationsScope and Content
This folder contains several typescript documents, some of them incomplete, relating to Lewis Latimer’s biography and work record. Most appear to be in the form of a resumé, and/or a letter of recommendation by one of his employers. (A typed annotation on one of the pages indicates that that document was to be returned to Edwin W. Hammer, who was Latimer’s employer from about 1912 until Latimer’s retirement in 1924.) Though written in the third person, the information in these documents was clearly provided by Latimer, and constitutes a valuable source of biographical data to supplement his other autobiographical writings. The folder also includes one page of an incomplete typescript in which an unidentified writer casts doubt on the “practical value” of a Latimer application, apparently to patent or market an “elastic tread vehicle wheel.”Context
