Luminous EffectScope and Content
Despite the “Luminous Effect” folder designation, these blueprints include part of Latimer’s proposal for a safe elevator system. A penciled note on the back of the blueprint reads “Safety Elevator Invention + Explanation blueprint.” Another note in pen reads “L. H. Latimer 120 Broadway N. Y.” Latimer worked at 120 Broadway (the nine-story Equitable Life Assurance Building between Pine and Cedar Streets, the world’s first office building featuring passenger elevators) twice during his career: for Hiram Maxim in 1880, and again for Edison circa 1902--1910. The images consist of multiple technical drawings, showing detailed schematics with precise measurements and structural layouts. Several sheets feature symmetrical designs that may correspond to building façades, machinery parts, or electrical layouts. Some images include hands in gloves handling documents, suggesting archival or conservation work. Additionally, a few pages have handwritten notes and signatures, indicating possible ownership, authorship, or approval records for the project.Context
This set includes architectural blueprints and technical drawings, likely related to a building, machine, or engineering project. The materials appear to be historical blueprints, given their deep blue background with white technical linework. Some documents also include handwritten text and folded pages, possibly indicating notes, signatures, or annotations related to the project.Collection
