Description

This album, containing small photographic portraits known as cartes de visite, helped the Latimers to preserve a record of their history. It includes pictures of family members, African American and White friends, prominent antislavery activists, and cards issued by abolitionists showing enslaved children who gained freedom during the Civil War. One of the enclosed photographs is accompanied by a modern pencilled query reading, “Lewis A. Latimer’s mother?” But there is no confirmation that the portrait actually depicts his mother, Rebecca Latimer.
