Context

Book of poetry by Lewis Latimer: Published as a commemorative edition for Latimer's seventy-seventh birthday, the book is a reflection of his personal experiences and emotions, captured in verse, and dedicated to his wife. For Latimer’s seventy-seventh birthday in 1925, his friend Dr. Robert Leslie, an art instructor at New York University, arranged to have this selection of his poems printed in a limited edition. Leslie was himself a civil rights activist, helping to run the racially integrated Civic Club in Manhattan, where Black and white intellectuals could eat together, a rarity at the time.
