Page of a Scrapbook, (1 folder, 1879-1888)Scope and Content
The folder contains personal letters addressed to and from members of the Latimer family, discussing family matters, social events, and professional engagements. Some letters include stamps and postal markings, adding to their historical authenticity. Among the items are letters dated 1893 to Lewis Latimer from his childhood acquaintance Annie E. Johnson, a Massachusetts poet known as “Annie of Nahant.” Johnson mentions Latimer’s mother fondly, and reminisces about “the old days and ‘little Lewis,’ who had a blank book, with ‘Scraps’ on the cover, and drawings inside even then.” The folder also includes clippings of newspaper articles—one of them about Lewis Latimer, and one probably written by him—that shed valuable light on his early scientific career in Bridgeport, Connecticut, circa 1880.Context
