Description

Single brass uniform button with an image of an eagle on it. It has a large dent as was struck by a bullet. Button was worn on the uniform of Captain Walter W. Sturtevant, Co. D 2nd ME Regiment. Walter Sturtevant was a native of Milo, Maine. He enlisted May 28, 1861 as a 1st lieutenant and was promoted to captain December 8, 1861. He mustered out June 9, 1863.

Walter William Sturtevant was born June 16, 1823 in Milo, Maine. His first wife was Jeanette T. Haskell and they had four children: Elwin, Harry, Mellie, and Minnie. Jeanette died in 1880 and Walter remarried Harriet "Hattie" Bolster in 1882 and they had two children: Edith and Arthur. Walter enlisted as a 1st lieutenant in Company D of the 2nd Maine Infantry on May 28, 1861. He was promoted to captain December 8, 1861. He was mustered out June 9, 1863. He returned to Milo and worked as a farmer until his death on May 18, 1911. He is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Milo.
