Description

Wooden bit brace (also known as a bitstock). Smoothly shaped beech wood with rabbit edges and a well turned hand grip elbow. Its clamp is also made solely of wood. Has an iron ferrel (tip) which is a ring held in place by four cut nails.

Made about 1825. According to Jeff Miller (oral communication 8/28/2023) this could date from the late 18th through the early 19th century.

Information on card accompanying inventory card: The early native brace in America was made of well seasoned hardwood, most likely hickory or oak with burl wood often used for the shaped elbows.
