High Chest of Drawers

Name/Title

High Chest of Drawers

Description

Walnut high chest of drawers on frame in William and Mary Style. Frame supported by six inverted cup and cone turned legs linked at base by scalloped stretchers. Each leg with ball feet below stretchers. Cornice molding across top of chest with a built in shallow drawer contained within it. Cornice is over two side by side drawers above three graduated drawers. Drawer fronts consist of walnut veneers on white pine and each drawer has a herringbone border along its edges roughly 1/2 inch in width. The entire secondary wood of all the drawers is pine including that supporting the walnut veneer drawer fronts. The lower section (the frame) contains three drawers above a deeply scalloped skirt supported by the four front turned trumpet legs. The profile of he skirt is embellished with a bead molding. All the drawers have brasses with brass bail handles which appear to be original along with matching brass key hole escutcheons on the three long drawers on the chest. The bottom and second drawer of the chest have their original locks set into the pine.

Notes

The brasses on the upper case drawers would appear to be period and possibly original. However the same type of brasses on the three drawers of the lower case/frame are flanked by to pairs of holes (one above the other) suggesting that these drawers may originally have had other types of brasses.
