Civil War blue wool kepi. Worn by Joseph A. Hall of Damariscotta, a soldier in 16th Maine Infantry Regiment, Company G. Metal "16" and "G" on top of cap. Also patch of blue cross with white border. Leather brim, gold metal button on one side. Hole in top of cap is from a bullet. Hat was originally blue but is now very faded to look almost gray. Joseph Hall enlisted August 7, 1863 and was discharged May 16, 1865. He was wounded in the head at the Battle of Hatcher's Run February 7, 1865.

Hat belonged to Joseph A. Hall, a soldier from Damariscotta in Company G. of the 16th Maine. Joseph's parents were Lemuel and Hannah Hall. He was born March 1837 in Jefferson, Maine. He was drafted in the Company G of the 16th Maine on August 7, 1863 and discharged May 16, 1865. He was wounded in the head at the Battle of Hatcher's Run Virginia February 7, 1865. He married Emma F. Sinclair in 1887 and they had one child, Alden. Emma died in 1880 and Joseph then married Inez E. Hodgkins in 1883 and they had one child, Margaret. Joseph worked as a farmer. He died May 5, 1914 and is buried at Glidden Cemetery in Newcastle.
