Description

Whole cloth wool handwoven fabric quilt. Top is dark reddish brown, lining is butternut dyed hand woven fabric. Bottom of quilt is squared off to accommodate the bed posts. The quilt is hand quilted in Prince’s plume, flowers and clamshell motifs. A very large quilt with a bold pattern. Wool batting back.

According to quilt scholar Laurie Labar, this quilt likely dates to the 1820s and 1830s when geometric designs began to replace more baroque designs in wholecolth quilts.
