1330Description
Coffee became a popular beverage with Americans during the 1770s as a substitute for tea. Once could use a mortar and pestle to prepare the beans; but mechanical grinders, such as this one, provided an easier means to crack the beans. Thomas Buff, a Maryland dentist, secured the first U.S. Patent for a coffee grinder in 1789. There are no manufacturer’s marks on this grinder, so we do not know who made it or if it follows Buff’s design. Our records indicate that this grinder was used in the Single Sisters House and that it may also have served to grind spices as well as coffee.Create Date
