Use
For ice harvesting, an ice plow (see item 005) was used in the first stages to prepare the ice blocks. This usually required two men, one guiding a horse which pulled the plow and the second guiding the plow to score the ice about 1/2 inch deep. The plower would then move the plow about 22 inches from the groove, and, using a guide, cut a parallel groove. Eventually the ice harvester would make grooves at right angles to the first sets.
Using the 1/2 inch grooves as a guide, they would use an ice saw, such as this one, to cut blocks of ice for removal.
