In 1970, Dr. Rosetta Sands joined the UMSON faculty; in 1971, she was promoted to assistant professor.
In 1974, she was promoted to Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Curriculum at UMSON.
In 1983, she became Dean of the School of Nursing and Allied Health at Tuskegee University.
In 1987, she was appointed Dean of Health Professions and Nursing at William Paterson College (now William Paterson University). While at WPC, Dr. Sand established the Center for Research, expanding faculty scholarship and interdisciplinary research. When WPC reorganized in 1991, she became Dean of the School of Science and Health, while also serving as acting Dean of the School of Education. She retired from WPC in 1993.
In 1978, she was elected President of the Board of Trustees of Provident Hospital.
In 1980, she was elected to the Board of Blue Cross.
In 1981, she became the first African American to serve as president of the Maryland Nurses Association.
