Scope and Content

Ellen Coleman Israel (August 16, 1882 - July 11, 1975) graduated from the School of Nursing in 1910. After graduating from nursing school, she was in charge of the operating room at the Emergency Hospital in Annapolis, before joining the staff at the University Hospital in Baltimore. Before she retired in 1945, her career included a stint as the assistant to the acting superintendent of nurses. From 1918-1919, she served in France as a member of the Army Nurse Corps at Base Hospital 42. She remained active in the UMSON Alumni Association, and held many positions, in addition to volunteering with the Altar Guild ff St. Paul's Church (Episcopal) at Charles and Saratoga Streets in Baltimore. After her death, her niece, Emma Bird Revelle, inherited a steamer trunk of Ellen Israel's possessions, including correspondence during her college years, her service in World War I, photographs, her WWI ANC uniform, hat, and shoes, and other memorabilia. Ellen Coleman Israel is buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore, near family members.
