Heaton of Staunton, Virginia, commanding officer of the 802nd Hospital Center, which sponsored the pilgrimage (125th anniv. of birth), ^ to her grave spoke of Florence Nightingale as "that great and noble lady who gave so much to nursing and humanity all over the world." He praised American nurses for their war work and for "carrying on in the Florence Nightingale tradition." May 12, 1945
