Photo of Mike Ferrer (left) and a fellow soldier after graduating from advanced individual training (AIT) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky in November 1980. AIT provided additional training on special weapons and added two weeks of training to the six weeks of regular boot camp. The men are standing outside barracks and wearing their dress uniforms. Mike and his fellow soldier knew where they had been assigned at this point. Their assignments are reflected in their uniforms. Their blue sashes show that they are infantry soldiers. Mike is wearing a Private First Class Stripe because he earned some college credits before enlisting in the military. The other soldier is wearing "Screaming Eagle" patch, which represents the 101st Airborne Division. At this time, the infantry gave soldiers a $5,000 bonus check for successfully completing training. Mike served in the U.S. Army between 1980 and 1985. He was a member of the Commander-in-Chief's Guard for most of his service.Collection
