Ed Garza In His BunkerEntry/Object ID
2023.43.3Description
Photo of Ed Garza wearing his fatigues and sitting down in his bunker (#9) in Cuchi Fire Base, Vietnam. His helmet, gas mask, and ammunition bag are hanging on the wall behind him. Mr. Garza's rifle is leaning on the wall to his right (out of frame). He is holding a cigarette and his bush hat, which he preferred to wear instead of his helmet. Mr. Garza's watch had a leather strap to prevent itching in the heat. This photo was taken on a cleanup day. He and his fellow soldiers had the day to relax before going back out in combat the next day. He is 19 years old in this photo. Mr. Garza served in the 25th Infantry in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. North Vietnamese soldiers utilized an extensive tunnel system during the war. Mr. Garza was often assigned to the tunnels because he was slim and could better navigate tunnels.Collection
