Painting of a train dumping containers of molten blast furnace residue (slag) into a pit on property owned by USS Lorain Works. View from possibly the 21st Street bridge area - or at least this was a sight many remember seeing from the 21st Street Bridge.

Context

"At night, before we had TVs, many Lorainites could be found from time to time parked near the 21st St. overhead bridge watching National Tube dumping fiery slag from huge rail car ladles as part of the steel making process." - Margaret Molnar

Notes

Slag Granulation Plant (SGP) / Slag Dumping Yard: During the process of iron making, the impurities are fluxed and removed as slag. The hot liquid slag is made into slag granules by means of high pressure water jets in the Slag Granulation Plant in the Cast House itself (sometimes separate SGP is located at a distance from the furnace proper). If the slag is not granulated in SGP, it is poured in the Slag Dumping Yard.
