- Photo scrapbook of Harriet Alger's kindergarten classroom at Charleston Elementary School in the 1960s. Contains black and white photos of children and used as a tool for young students to understand how school worked.Context
Harriet Alger was focused on providing hands on experience of the natural world, learning through play, and hearing and making music. Harriet was a world traveler which influenced her teaching. She went back and got her doctorate degree in education all while being a single mom. Harriet's mother (Vantia Mae Longwell) took these photos. They were intentionally taken to show an integrated classroom with children from different skin colors interacting together so the children entering the classroom for the first time would understand and help breakdown potential barriers in the 1960s.Acquisition
