Description

2 color photos taken by Michael Kamnikar of rebuilt building at 742 Broadway with word "Tornado" made from bricks from original building Photograph is color view of the word "Tornado" located at the top of the building at 725 Broadway. Written on the back of the photograph: "'Tornado' word made from bricks after rebuilding". The "Tornado" building was very important to Lorain's history. It was built in the early 1900s. The first business to reside in the new building was the Old Griffin Hotel. In 1912, the Majestic Hotel took over the building and was located there for a little over 10 years. The building lost its entire third floor as a result of the 1924 Lorain Tornado that devastated nearly every building in the downtown area. H. P. Kirkland Furniture took over the building in the 1920s and rebuilt the third floor and adding a 60 ft. three story extension at the rear of the building. Brownie Furniture Store and Stillman Deutsch Furniture and Appliance Store, along with other businesses were located in the building over the years.
