Oral History Interview for Vine Avenue with Mary Lou Andujar-Hough
Mary Lou was born in 1957 and was one of seven children born to parents who didn’t speak English. Her father came to Lorain in the ‘50s to work the railroad until he was recruited to work at Ford Motor Company in Cleveland. Her childhood was not the easiest and money was often tight so at age 9, she earned $5 a week cleaning cans on the shelves of a grocery store. At 15, she got married and had three children, but it was not the happily ever after she had hoped for, and Mary Lou found the courage to go back to school and get a divorce. She had a 32-year career as a social worker and was very active in the Puerto Rican Home, where she was a treasurer for four years. “We had good times. We always had dances, Fridays and Saturdays.”Collection
