Oral History Interview for Vine Avenue with Maria Berrios
Maria was born in 1947 in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico and came to Lorain at the age of six, the second youngest of 14 children. Her two eldest brothers were the first to come to Lorain to work at the National Tube Company and establish themselves before sending for their families, including their father, who settled into a job at the Fruehauf Company in Avon Lake. Maria recalls her childhood attending St. Ladislaus, learning English, and how the Catholic community shaped her life and allowed her to maintain her Puerto Rican identity. Remembering Vine Avenue, Gladys says her older siblings probably had more stories, “But I do remember, it’s like I can close my eyes, I can smell the foods. Oh, just a picture. I can see the Neighborhood House. When we used to go there. Sometimes they would have little activities there for the kids so we would go there. And the people and the businesses.” She continues, “Yes, I have memories, many memories.”Collection
