Oral History Interview for Vine Avenue with Marcie Martinez Sweat
75-year-old Marciella “Marcie” Martinez moved to Lorain from Texas at the age of three and is fifth generation American of Mexican descent. Her family were migrant workers, traveling to Ohio and Michigan during the summer months. In 1949, her grandfather got a job at Lake Terminal Railroad and Marcie, along with her grandmother, her mother, and brother stayed in Lorain while her father went back to Texas. She recounts the various jobs her mother held, her grandfather buying a house when she was 10, and her education at St. Ladislaus. Life around Vine Street “…was like a big family”, she says, adding “So everybody looked out for everybody. I didn’t know any barriers of any kind, race, religion, no color, no language barrier, no anything. We were just one.”Collection
