Oral History Interview for Vine Avenue with Hector Medina
Born in Jayuya, Puerto Rico in 1953, Hector came to Lorain when he was six months old. He remembers a fantastic childhood running errands for his elderly neighbor, making forts out of boxes from Dallas Brothers Furniture with his brother Raul, and eating tomatoes out of his grandfather’s garden. Many of Hector’s stories are centered around Broadway and he recalls, “When we were kids, on Saturday, you walked down Broadway and it was packed with people. There would be sailors in their pristine white uniforms and their little white caps to the side.” When asked his thoughts about urban renewal, Hector replies “Disaster. Downright treacherous” and continues, “They broke up the community.”Collection
