Oral History Interview for Vine Avenue with Hugo Tenorio
The Tenorio family moved to Lorain in 1938/39 from Detroit, Michigan when Hugo was two or three years old, although he doesn’t recall why. His father ran a Hispanic grocery on Vine Avenue and the family lived in an apartment behind the store. When Hugo was older, his parents divorced, and his mom kept the store while his dad bought another one across the street in the Andorka’s bowling alley building. Hugo would drive 14 hours one way to New York in a 16 ft. box truck to get fresh produce for the Mexican and Puerto Rican community. He recalls Tony Rogers’ cigar store, Johnny Roth pharmacy, and the ice truck – “Oh yeah, of course we always had the ice truck where they would sell the 25, 50-pound blocks of ice.” Hugo is now 84 and has lived in the same house in South Lorain for 52 years.Collection
