Oral History Interview for Vine Avenue with Eileen Torres
69-year-old Eileen, like her father, was born and raised in Lorain. Her grandfather, Francisco Torres, came in the 1920s from Mexico to work the steel mill. Growing up in Lorain, Eileen was exposed to many different cultures who all lived in harmony in Lorain, it wasn’t until she went to Colorado for college that she experienced racism and how different life experiences were for many other Mexican Americans. While a student, Eileen recalls, “I helped form the first Ballet Folklorico there at the college, and I came away with a very strong sense of responsibility and duty because the United Mexican American Students, which I was grateful for my education, thrust upon us that the idea that once you got an education, you needed to take the expertise back to your community to help lift it.” That is exactly what she did!Collection
