Oral history interview with Mike Ferrer. Mike served in the U.S. Army between 1980 and 1985. He was in the Commander-in-Chief's Guard ("Old Guard"), which is a special ceremonial unit of the U.S. Army. During Mike's advanced training, a sergeant from the Old Guard came up to Mike and offered to bring him onto the unit. The Old Guard is assigned to the White House and provides presidential escorts. The Old Guard also marches in every single parade, assists with Arlington Cemetery burials, and participates in the Spirit of America shows. Mike participated in 3 main Spirit of America shows and 14 or 15 traveling Spirit of America shows. As part of the Old Guard, Mike marched every day and was based out of Fort McNair in Washington, D.C.
6 months before he wanted to leave the military, Mike transferred out of the Old Guard and into the 101st Air Assault. He spent his last 6 months of military service repelling out of helicopters. He attended warmth training in Puerto Rico at one point. Mike received some time off to find family in Puerto Rico but ended up mostly sightseeing around the island.Collection
