National Tube Employees Garden Club 1931Context
In early May, 1931, National Tube made available 50' x 100' garden plots to employees and about 250 took advantage of the land. These were located in the river basin by the East 31st street bridge. P.P. (Paul Peters) Reese, assistant superintendent of the steel plant, was in charge of preparing the land for employee gardens. This was during the Great Depression when many municipalities - and in this case, industries - created "relief garden" plots, which community members tended to in an effort to provide fresh food to those in need
