Ray Lawrence "the Record Man" as told to Allen Secher
Born Ray Skrepich, this book contains stories on growing up in South Lorain, joining the Navy, and mostly about how Ray got into the music business and became successful promoting records and artists, eventually moving to California. In the back of the book there is also a CD
Excerpt from page.94: "Here's how things worked. Ray Lawrence Ltd. had all-stars. You're Barbara Streisand. You had an album. You wanted to do something big. You'd call Ray Lawrence. I promoted it, distributed it, looked for sales. I did anything to merchandise or market the record. Even though artists like Barbra [sic] Streisand or Johnny Mathis were on Columbia and Columbia should have been promoting them, their managers would call me. My reputation was that good. The record companies would protest, 'But we take care of all radio stations.' The answer was always that Ray Lawrence would provide twice the promotion." and "I knew the business. I have ears and I know music. Say you made a record and didn't know what the hell to do with it. You came to me. I looked at the record, played it and saw if it was good. I knew when something was good and I knew when something was bad. Instinct. That's all. What you hear. What you feel."
Per the city directories, Ray grew up at 317 W. 31 Street. Goss Donaldson, KaitlynAcquisition
