Context

Steve Csik (later Steve Chick)'s dairy was located at 2321 E 29th Street. Steve first worked for the steel mill, then began working for another dairy in 1918 as a delivery truck driver, and then decided to open his own dairy in 1920. "'My mother [Sadie] worked in the dairy just like my dad did. She took care of making the cheese and bottling the milk. they made the best sour cream. They also made cottage cheese and sold cream. There weren't any big grocer stores, then, so they carried several dairy items. At that time, they bottled the milk by hand because bottling machines hadn't come along yet,' Emma said. 'When he delivered milk to the homes in the morning, the ladies would ladle their own milk out and pour it right into their pitchers. He got a bottling machine later on, and we started selling milk out of our own glass bottles around 1930. We never sold milk in cardboard cartons." - Interview with Emma Aros and Marilyn Novak, daughters of Steve and Sadie Chick, 1999 (Interview by Mark Sakal Reference # 2019.FIC.6).
