Description
A set of three court mounted medals awarded to Reginald Moore Charters consisting of the British War Medal, the Allied Victory Medal and the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal.
Use
Issued to mark service during the First World War and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of King George the Fifth coming to the throne.
Context
Reginald Charters was a member of a prominent Brampton family. His father served twice as Mayor of Brampton, as a Provincial Member and as a Federal Member of Parliament. He was the owner of the Brampton Conservator newspaper and the Charters Publishing Company.
Reginald enlisted at age 18 in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in October of 1915 in Kingston. He was transferred to the 9th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery in January 1916 and sent to England in February of 1916. In July he was posted to 45 Battery, 9 Brigade and spent the rest of the war with 45 Battery. He was employed as a driver and qualified as a Signaller during his service. 9 Brigade supported the 3rd Infantry Division through the battles of 1916, 1917 and 1918. Reginald was struck off strength of 9 Brigade while on leave in England and retained in England until he could be returned to Canada. He returned to Canada in March of 1919 and was demobilized at Kingston.
Postwar, he was employed with the family publishing business.
