Description

Three Canada General Service Medals with Fenian Raid 1866 Clasps. Medals are named to Cpl Barnes 20th Bn, Pte's Beamish and Strong of the Alton Volunteer Company

Use

Recognition of service during the 1866 Fenian Raid in Ontario and Quebec.

Context

The medal and clasp were first authorized in 1899 and recognize the service of thousands of Canadian Militia men who served during the armed invasions of Ontario and Quebec by the Irish American Fenian Brotherhood. The Fenians wanted to use the capture of Canada to gain Ireland's freedom from Britain. Pte Christian Barnes of the Stewarttown Company served at Clifton and St Catherines from 2 Jun to 9 July 1866. He received his medal in 1900. Pte Francis Beamish of the Albion Company guarded prisoners in June of 1866. He received his medal in 1900. Pte Henry Strong of the Albion Company guarded prisoners at Bolton in June of 1866. He received his medal in 1900.
