Description

36 mm wide silver campaign medal bearing the effigy of Queen Victoria on the obverse with the legend "Victoria Regina et Imperatrix (Victoria, Queen and Empress)". The reverse has a Canadian flag surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves under the word "Canada". The 32 mm wide ribbon has three equal width stripes of red, white, red. Clasps were authorised to recognise service in the Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870 and the Red River Expedition of 1870

Context

Private Daniel McGuire was a member of the Stewarttown Volunteer Company in 1866. Between 2 June and 9 July, he served at Clifton (now Niagara Falls) and St Catherines. He also escorted Fenian prisoners from Niagara to Toronto. Pte McGuire's medal was issued in 1900. The medal was issued on application between 1899 and 1928. 17,623 medals were issued of which 15, 300 were to Canadians. All the medals were issued with clasps. The recipient's name, rank and unit were impressed on the rim of the medal.
