Context

The 3 inch mortar was introduced into service in the British and Commonwealth armies in the early 1930's and served until the 1960's, when it was replaced by a more improved model. The mortar fired high explosive, smoke and illumination ammunition. The bomb shown with the mortar is a high explosive round. it weighs approximately 10 pounds and would produce about 10,00 fragments, with a casualty producing radius of about 30 yards. The mortar had a maximum range of approximately 2,800 yards.
