Trench Art

Name/Title

Trench Art

Description

First World War Trench Art made from the brass casing of an 18-pound artillery shell made by Remington in 1916. An embossed design of "The Somme" surrounded by oak leaves and diamonds has been created by punching down the shell casing to create the design.

Use

The casing was worked to create a souvenir of service on the Somme in 1916.

Context

Presumably made by a person near the Western Front (France and Belgium) to commemorate the Somme Offensive of 1916. The 18 pounder field guns were the work horses of the Canadian Field Artillery. Millions of spent shell casings proliferated from the intense artillery barrages of the war. Many individual pieces were kept as souvenirs or turned into trench art.
