Scope and Content

Art attended Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose for high school and obtained his Political Science and Pre-Law degree from the University of Oregon. He first moved to Los Altos in 1967 both out of a fondness for Los Altos and to be closer to his job. Art was on the founding board of the Los Altos Community Foundation but left the board to allow new people to join with fresh ideas. Art is a long-standing member of the Los Altos Kiwanis Club who established the Kiwanis Christmas tree lot, aided in the Los Altos Pet Parade, and participated in the 1976 Bicentennial Parade alongside the local Rotary. His work in the club and the leadership shown as President of the Chamber of Commerce resulted in local businessmen encouraging him to run for City Council. He served with Roy Lave and Bob Grimm and they became unofficially known as “The Three Mayors” and are well-loved to this day due to their support of the community after their terms on the City Council. Art has been very involved in the community due to his role in the Kiwanis, his term as President of the Chamber of Commerce, and his term on the City Council. He organized the Christmas tree lot to remain at Lucky Supermarket through a mutually beneficial agreement to buy the trees through the supermarket.
