McDonald attended Glendale College in California. McDonald moved to Los Altos in 1970. He always had an interest in Los Altos and knew a childhood friend there who would become his wife. He worked with students at the Bechtel Center, where he also hosted a foreign student as part of a cultural exchange program. He also taught at the Palo Alto Adult School. Additionally, McDonald was a member of the Los Altos Historical Commission.
Don McDonald was a history enthusiast who started the Oral History program at the Los Altos History Museum, conducting dozens of interviews of community members. Before living in Los Altos, McDonald spent his time in the United States Navy and teaching cryptography. He wrote Images of America: Early Los Altos and Los Altos Hills jointly with the Los Altos History Museum. McDonald notes that interviews with the Los Altos History Museum were originally restricted to events before 1950, but today, interviews may occur from any year. His varied interests led him to explore little details, such as his knowledge of the origins of Los Altan streets.Collection
