Scope and Content

Cleary attended UC San Francisco and received his Ph.D. at Rutgers University. Gary Cleary received the Outstanding Leadership in Arts Advocacy Award from the Community School of Music and Art. He was part of the CSMA board and helped fundraise for the school. Gary Cleary pioneered the use of transdermal patches, replacing the use of a needle for drug and medicine supplies. Cleary’s dislike for the constant use of needles inspired him to develop a transdermal patch, which allows drugs to be absorbed into the skin. The idea is that a patch is painless to take off, which eliminates the use of needles. Cleary received a patent for the transdermal patch which aided in the development of products such as teeth whitening strips. Despite being quite passionate about art his entire life, Cleary has been extremely successful in the science field, leading to developments in nicotine patches.
