Miyake attended San Antonio Grammar School. She spent her time at the Japanese internment camps organizing dances, clubs, and education opportunities in order to create community during a rather terrifying time.
Being a first-generation Japanese American, Miyake never considered herself different while growing up. She spent her childhood with her family and helping out with the family’s farm, living an Americanized life while also maintaining Japanese culture. It was during World War II that she realized that white Americans viewed her differently, despite similar upbringings. Despite being an American citizen, Miyake and her family were forced to move into Japanese internment camps. Afterward, she could not move back home, so she was forced to relocate to Michigan for a bit.Collection
