Jane Reed went to elementary and high school in Claremont, California. She attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon before transferring to the University of California at Berkeley where she was an art major graduating in June of 1962. Jane also later received a Masters Certificate in Museum Studies from JFK University in California. Jane and John Reed moved to Los Altos in the spring of 1968 because John got a job at American Microsystems (AMI). During her 52 years living in Los Altos, Jane held leadership positions in many organizations including the AAUW, the Los Altos Parks & Recreation Commission, the Los Altos City Council (Mayor 1982-1983 & 1987-1988), AFS, Los Altos Village Association (LAVA Executive Director), Pilgrim Haven (later renamed The Terraces), and the Los Altos History Museum (Board member for 12 years; Chair of Changing Exhibits Committee for 15 years). It is fitting that Jane’s campaign motto when she ran for City Council was “Jane Loves Los Altos.”
The bulk of Jane Reed’s oral history deals with her involvement in Los Altos city government during her eight years on the City Council as well as the many non-profit organizations she participated in such as the Sister City Program, PTA, the LASD Art Docent Program, and the History Museum. Jane has done so much for the community that it is hard to name all her contributions. The most noteworthy part of the interview was the breadth and wide variety of ways Jane made Los Altos a better community using her talents as a leader and an artist in creative ways.Collection
